September 10, 2004 -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced late last week that Fort Dodge Animal Health, of Overland Park, Kan., has agreed with FDA?s request to cease production and recall its heartworm medication, ProHeart 6, from the market until concerns about adverse reaction reports associated with the product can be resolved.

ProHeart 6 is an approved injectable sustained-release heartworm prevention product for dogs. FDA has advised veterinarians to avoid administering this product to dogs until further notice.

Pet and guard dog owners should consult their veterinarian with questions.
