ASI Conducts First AWEX Training Sessions

April 30, 2004 -- The American Wool Council this week conducted its first two Australian Wool Exchange-ID (AWEX) training sessions.

AWEX-ID is a system for the appraisal and description of non-measured characteristics of greasy wool. It differs from other typing systems in the amount of detailed information provided. Another bonus of the AWEX system is that the information generated is universal and therefore recognized by producers, buyers and sellers globally.

?By combining AWEX-ID with presale objective measurements, a full and credible description for wool is possible,? said Bob Padula, raw wool consultant to the American Wool Council.

To logically report appraisals of wool, the AWEX-ID is split into two parts, namely ?prime? (mandatory) and ?qualifier? (where applicable) characteristics.

Prime characteristics include breed, wool subcategory, wool category, style and vegetable matter type. Qualifier characteristics include unscourable wool, dark stain, jowls, brands, mud, black and gray and kemp.

The April 28-29 school in Denver drew nine participants. A second AWEX session is slated for April 30-May 1 in Roswell, N.M.

A follow-up session will be held in July to discuss areas of concern and how the industry can move forward with an AWEX description of wool.
