ASI to Host Certified Wool Classing School

April 16, 2004

April 16, 2004 -- The Maryland & Delaware Wool Pool at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Tinonium, Md., will be the site of a Certified Wool Classing School on June 22-25, 2004.

The classing school program will be tailored to the needs of Eastern sheep producers, with emphasis on bulk classing and commercial wool marketing through wool pools.

The 3-1/2 day program will include:
  • one day on topics such as wool biology, pre-planning and wool preparation at shearing, fundamentals of wool classing, objective measurement of wool and discussion regarding AWEX-ID in the description of non-measured characteristics;

  • two days on hands-on classing under the direction of certified classers for the Maryland Wool Pool. Activities the last two days include wool pressing (baling), proper labeling and marking of wool, sampling for core testing and staple length/strength testing.
Participants will be given a certification test the final day, and will be registered with ASI as certified wool classers.

Class size is limited to 15 participants, so early registration is strongly recommended. Cost is $100 per person.
