Let's Grow To Select Fifth Round Recipients
May 5, 2017

The American Sheep Industry Association's Let's Grow Committee will meet in Denver on Monday and Tuesday, May 8-9, to select the fifth round of grant recipients from a program that has already put more than $865,000 back into the American sheep industry since 2015.

The fifth round of funding drew 17 requests with needs in excess of $439,000 by the April 20 deadline. That is the lowest number of requests received for any single round of funding, but there's a reason the number of requests is down.

"I think what we're seeing is two things," said Let's Grow Committee Chair Susan Shultz of Ohio. "One, we've funded 50 grants in the past two years, so we've funded a lot of phenomenal projects already. Two, I believe we've refined the process to the point that those coming to us for funding have a better idea of the type of projects we're willing to fund. We've been able to eliminate requests that don't meet our criteria, or in some cases, funnel those requests to other sources that might be a better fit, such as the American Lamb Board, National Sheep Industry Improvement Center or the National Livestock Producers Association Sheep and Goat Fund.

"There's no doubt we'll have some great proposals in front of us as we meet in Denver to determine who will receive funding from this round of grants."
