Producers Benefit from Parasite Webinar
August 25, 2017

Funded in part through a Let's Grow grant from the American Sheep Industry Association, the latest in a series of online webinars guided participants through the difficult issues surrounding parasite resistance.

The Optimal Ag Consulting webinar on Aug. 22 featured Joan Burke, Ph.D., with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service. Working at the Dale Bumpers Small Farms Research Center in Booneville, Ark., Dr. Burke is certainly familiar with parasite issues.

More than 260 participants from 45 states and three Canadian provinces took part in the webinar, which saw tremendous interest from producers in the eastern half of the United States. Given the parasite issues they face, it was no surprise that states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia had the highest numbers of producer attendees.

"Parasites are a huge topic and very important for all livestock producers," wrote one attendee in a follow-up survey. "I would appreciate more specific topics about parasites. Knowing how important genetics plays into parasites is a game changer."

A recording of the webinar has been compiled and is available at https://youtu.be/QWtZZoiJaTY. The slides used during the presentation are also online at http://www.optimalag.net/sheepagriculture/webinars/selection-for-parasite-resistance/.
