New Website Highlights 2017 Antibiotics Rules

September 16, 2016

Livestock groups, including the American Sheep Industry Association, are working to inform producers of the veterinary feed directives and the corresponding changes related to antibiotic use coming in January 2017.

This week, the Animal Health Institute, National Pork Producers Council, National Cattlemen's Beef Association and the Animal Agriculture Alliance launched a new website,, which provides information about how the Food and Drug Administration's new policy will change the way antibiotics are used to keep food animals healthy.

The policy requires a veterinarian/client/patient relationship, meaning a veterinarian must supervise antibiotic use on farms.

"This new website is a good source of general information," said Paul Rodgers, ASI deputy director of policy. "However, sheep are classified as minor species and the specific rules regulating antibiotic use for this category of livestock have not yet been released by the Food and Drug Administration."

ASI continues to ask for clarification on how the regulations will apply to sheep as a minor species.
