Sheep Station Draft Environmental Impact Statement Available
March 18, 2016

A U.S. Sheep Experiment Station Grazing and Associated Activities Project 2016 Revised Draft Environmental Impact Statement document, appendices and supporting documents have been posted to the Agricultural Research Services website at www.ars.usda.gov/News/docs.htm?docid=17878.

The station conducts research activities to develop integrated methods for increasing production efficiency of sheep and simultaneously to improve the sustainability of rangeland ecosystems. In the Revised DEIS, USSES provides alternative grazing options that will be open for public comment.

The Notice of Availability of the Revised DEIS is anticipated to be published in the Federal Register soon. The period for public comment will be 45 days following the publication. Additional information will be passed along once the notice is published.

On a related note, animal activist groups have dropped a lawsuit to halt sheep grazing at the station after a federal official said grazing would not continue until an environmental analysis is complete.

The lawsuit filed in 2014 claimed USSES didn't follow federal environmental laws to determine the impacts of sheep grazing on grizzly bears, lynx, wolves, bighorn sheep and other animals.
