ASI Continues to Support Berry Amendment

June 10, 2016

The American Sheep Industry Association joined other trade associations in continuing the drive to maintain the integrity of the Berry Amendment by asking U.S. Senators to support Amendment 4550 to the FY 2017 National Defense Authorization Act offered by Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.).

Senate Amendment 4550 is a technical amendment that strengthens our national security and helps the U.S. textile, apparel and footwear industries and its 592,000 workers, as well as the food, hand tool and measuring tool sectors and their workers by stopping a weakening of the Berry Amendment.

Legislation being considered in the NDAA would create a third form of commercial procurement that may or may not apply to the Berry Amendment. While it is not believed that the language was written to intentionally affect the application of the Berry Amendment in regard to this third form of commercial procurement, Graham's amendment would eliminate any ambiguity by clarifying that the Berry Amendment would continue to apply to procurement of commercial items.
