A Bit of History About Earth Day
April 22, 2016

Although every day is Earth Day to farmers and ranchers, the entire world joins in the celebration today, April 22.

Did you know that it was a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara in 1969 that sparked the idea of Earth Day? The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970, mobilized 20 million Americans from all walks of life. Their actions led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts. Today, more than one-billion people in 192 countries participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest civic observance in the world.
