The American sheep industry let out a collective sigh of relief with the release this week of the H-2A Herder Final Rule from the U.S. Department of Labor. The rule followed much of the sheep industry's proposed methodology concerning two critical issues that arose in the original DOL proposal earlier this year: wages and open range.

Livestock producers in the western United States were dealt a blow last week when the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) issued a Federal Register notice proposing significant changes to regulations governing the employment of non-immigrant H-2A workers as sheepherders, goat herders and for the production of livestock on the open range.

The American Sheep Industry Association celebrated its 150th anniversary during the organization’s annual convention in Reno, Nev., Jan. 28-31. Registration numbers reached a 15-year high, as sheep producers from across the country came together to acknowledge the accomplishments of the oldest national livestock association in the United States.

The American Sheep Industry Association's (ASI) Board of Directors elected new officers Jan. 31 during the 2015 ASI Convention in Reno, Nev. Elected to the office of president is Burton Pfliger, N.D.; Mike Corn, Roswell, N.M., was elected as vice president; and, Benny Cox, San Angelo, Texas, is ASI's new secretary/treasurer.
