Canada Releases New Sheep Welfare Code
December 20, 2013
The Canadian Sheep Federation released updated industry guidelines this week with the new Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Sheep.
Initiated in January 2011, the new sheep code includes new pain standards for a number of on-farm practices like tail docking and castration. Clear requirements for how best to handle, house and transport the flock are also outlined in the document, which is available at www.nfacc.ca/pdfs/codes/sheep_code_of_practice.pdf.
The sheep guidelines replace the current code, which dates back to 1995.
