Today marks the two-year anniversary of the implementation of Mandatory Price Reporting for livestock. I want to commend your division for the many necessary improvements and upgrades provided since initiation of MPR. It seems the system has been very much a work in progress, partly to set up a new program nationwide, partly to match changes in the industry.
The void, Barry, that I believe should be highlighted in the system at the anniversary mark is price reports on imported lamb cuts at wholesale. I encourage all immediacy be placed on the steps to gain this report per the MPR rule. As we have discussed since initiation, in fairness to U.S. firms handling domestic lamb, the companies handling imported lamb must be included in MPR. As you are aware, wholesale price of imported lamb has been virtually non-existent, yet a large share of the U.S. market.
I look forward to the status of this priority of MPR and as always continuing to work with the Livestock and Seed division on the important programs to the nation’s lamb industry.
